GRASSY KEY, Fla. — The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that a South Florida teen died in a water-related incident following a dive on a hookah rig off Grassy Key on Saturday afternoon.
The victim’s father identified him to Local 10 News as 17-year-old Cameron Isaiah Ruwe.
Deputies said Cameron was swimming back to the boat around 1:30 p.m. when he went underwater.
According to the sheriff’s office, CPR was performed on Cameron as the U.S. Coast Guard and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission responded to the scene.
Cameron was taken to Fishermen’s Hospital in Marathon, where he was pronounced dead.
Deputies said foul play is not suspected. Autopsy results are pending.
A GoFundMe page has been created to help Cameron’s family as they prepare for his funeral service.
