HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a vehicle fire early Thursday morning and discovered that the vehicle belonged to the Hollywood Police Department, authorities confirmed.
According to MDSO, Hammocks district deputies responded to the 4500 block of Southwest 139th Court just after midnight where they found an unoccupied marked Hollywood police vehicle engulfed in flames.
Miami-Dade firefighters said they responded to the scene prior to deputies arriving, around 11:40 p.m. Wednesday.
Firefighters eventually extinguished the fire.
A Local 10 News crew went to the area later in the morning Thursday as deputies were still at the scene.
The vehicle had already been removed, leaving a large scorched patch of grass behind.
Video from the area shows a man running away from the flames with something in his hand.
Neighbors told Local 10 News they heard and felt an explosion prior to seeing the flames.
“We were sleeping,” Peter Ospino said. “When we noticed, we woke up super scared. My daughter had anxiety attacks the whole night because she couldn’t sleep after seeing it. When she opened her window, she faced the sight of it.”
The cause of the blaze remains under investigation. Miami-Dade Detective Samantha A. Choon told Local 10 News in an email that they cannot say at this time “whether this was a targeted incident.”
No injuries were reported.
