MIAMI — A New York man brutally attacked and sexually assaulted a woman who had sought safety in an office building after he followed her for nearly 20 blocks up Biscayne Boulevard early Friday morning, according to Miami police.
Authorities arrested suspect Eddie Zewayne Bussey, 28, of Yonkers, New York, on nearly a dozen felony charges on Tuesday, including kidnapping and multiple counts of attempted murder and sexual battery.
An arrest report from the Miami Police Department states that the 40-year-old woman had left a nightclub in the city’s Wynwood neighborhood sometime between 3:30 and 4:30 a.m.; her phone had run out of battery and she was walking home up Biscayne Boulevard, unable to request a ride.
Near Northeast 24th Street, police said the woman noticed Bussey, a stranger, “following her and yelling unsolicited remarks toward her such as, ‘Let me taste you.’”
“The victim crossed Biscayne Boulevard attempting to distance herself from (Bussey), but he continued to follow her mimicking her same movement crossing the road,” the MPD report states.
Police said the woman walked into an office building at 4770 Biscayne Blvd., in the Bay Point neighborhood, after “noticing it was well lit and fearing (for) her safety.”
Authorities said she went into the lobby and got into the elevator, going up to the 12th floor to try to find someone to help her. She couldn’t.
Police said after going back down to the lobby, she saw Bussey coming in. She tried to exit through another door, they said, but it turned out to be locked.
In an attack caught on surveillance camera, Bussey exposed himself, punched and choked the woman, then dragged her by the hair and dragged her into a mailroom, where he continued to punch, kick and choke her as she tried to fight back, the report states. Police said Bussey could be heard telling her, “Taste it,” “I’ll rape you” and “I’ll kill you” before performing multiple sex acts on her.
Authorities said the victim broke two of Bussey’s necklaces as she tried to fight him off. They said she was able to run to a nearby CVS Pharmacy, where she was able to call police.
“The victim sustained visible injuries, including bruising and discoloration to her face, lips, throat, back, ribs, hip and thigh, as well as (a) laceration to her cheek,” the report states.
DNA evidence from a rape kit tied the crime to Bussey, police said, and officers found him Tuesday near Northwest 36th Street and 13th Avenue in the city’s Allapattah neighborhood.
Bussey, according to the report, told investigators that he’s been staying in Miami with his brother for about a month at a short-term rental in Wynwood. The report states that he initially told officers he had “walked home and remained there for the rest of the night,” but then, after being shown a surveillance still from the Bay Point office building, “recanted and told detectives he was at the incident location to charge his phone.”
Police said he claimed that at the building, the victim made “racist remarks” and then “spat on him, causing him to black out and begin to beat her.”
But they said he “denied sexually assaulting” her because “she is a (woman) and he only likes (men).”
A separate arrest report states that Bussey became combative with officers as they tried to collect a DNA sample pursuant to a warrant, spitting on them and fighting them. They said he also “repeatedly kicked the wall and door inside the interview room,” causing damage.
As of Wednesday afternoon, Bussey was being held in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center with a bond listed in jail records as “to be set.”
