PHOENIX — Arizona authorities announced the indictment of a Miami man on Wednesday after they said he flew to Phoenix to scam seniors. He was arrested during his third time traveling there as part of the cross-country con, they said.
According to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, Andre Hart stole more than $65,000 from “several” seniors in metro Phoenix.
Authorities said Hart, 22, was participating in a phone-based scam in which fraudsters posed as bank representatives.
They said the victims “were persuaded to withdraw large sums of money and deliver the funds to someone they were told was an undercover investigator” and “were then sent an unwitting Uber driver who believed they were performing a package pickup and delivery.”
The Uber drivers would then hand the “package” to Hart, they said.
Authorities said his third trip to the Grand Canyon State would be his last before being handcuffed.
“Police were in the process of surveilling Hart to arrest him when they saw him receive one of the ‘packages,’” a news release from the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office states. “After taking him into custody, another Uber driver approached police to deliver another ‘package.’”
Records show that Hart was arrested by police in the Phoenix suburb of Glendale, Arizona on July 30 on four counts of fraudulent schemes and artifacts and three counts of theft.
Jail records show he was being jailed in Maricopa County on a $100,000 bond.
