New details provide additional information into fatal I-75 crash

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred late Sunday morning along the westbound lanes of I-75 to the west of Indian Trade Road.

Lewis was driving a black Ford Fiesta and was there to assist her son, whose vehicle had become disabled on the side of the road due to a flat tire, according to an arrest form.

Police said Lewis came to a stop in the outside lane of I-75, which caused a pileup after the vehicle behind her stopped, but the vehicle behind that one did not.

Authorities confirmed that two people have died from their injuries, while three others were injured, including a 1-year-old girl who was hospitalized in critical condition.

One of the deceased victims has been identified as Lucia Casco, 58, who was a passenger in the vehicle that was directly behind Lewis.

All of the injured victims were taken to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale.

First responders closed all westbound lanes of I-75 while processing the scene. The highway fully reopened shortly after 4 p.m.

As of Monday morning, Quinones Lewis remained held at the Broward County Main Jail.

The circumstances leading up to the crash remain under investigation, and it’s unclear which driver was at fault.
