Hurricane Milton: What’s open, closed in South Florida

MIAMI – While Hurricane Milton was not forecast to land a direct hit on South Florida, some entities were closing or modifying hours in advance of the storm.

Here’s what we’ve learned so far:

Courts and government:

Broward County courts will be closed on Wednesday and Thursday, while Miami-Dade courts will be closed on Wednesday.

Both Miami-Dade and Broward county governments continue to operate as usual.

Monroe County government offices will be closed on Wednesday.

Parks:

A number of state parks in Miami-Dade, Broward and the Florida Keys are closed.

Biscayne National Park will close at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Retail:

Publix and Winn-Dixie stores are operating at normal hours in South Florida.

Schools and colleges:

All three South Florida school districts — Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe — canceled classes for Wednesday.

Additionally, Broward County Public Schools officials said campuses would be closed Thursday.

Archdiocese of Miami Catholic schools in Broward and Miami-Dade were set to close Wednesday.

Florida International University plans to close its campus beginning at 5 p.m. Tuesday and will remain closed Wednesday.

Nova Southeastern University will close beginning at 5 p.m. on Tuesday and remain closed through Thursday.

The University of Miami canceled in-person classes for Wednesday and Thursday.

Broward College is suspending operations and canceling classes on Wednesday and Thursday.

Barry University and Miami Dade College are shutting down at 5 p.m. and canceling classes Wednesday.

The College of the Florida Keys said it “continues to closely monitor Hurricane Milton,” but has not announced any closures as of Tuesday morning.

Florida Memorial University will suspend classes at noon Tuesday through 8 a.m. Friday.

Transportation:

Brightline is shutting down train service between West Palm Beach and Orlando on Wednesday and Thursday with plans to “continue to monitor the storm and provide additional updates as needed.”

Miami, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood and Key West airports remained open. Officials urged flyers to check their flight statuses.

Public transit in Broward and Miami-Dade counties is scheduled to continue operating as normal.

In the Florida Keys, however, Key West Transit and the Lower Keys Shuttle will suspend service Wednesday and Thursday, county leaders said.
