Hurricane Milton: What’s open, closed in South Florida

MIAMI – While Hurricane Milton was not forecast to land a direct hit on South Florida, some entities were closing or modifying hours in advance of the storm.

Here’s what we’ve learned so far:

Banks:

Wells Fargo will close its branches across Broward and Miami-Dade counties at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

The Key Largo and Key West branches will be closed all day on Wednesday. A Wells Fargo spokesperson said the bank is monitoring conditions for Thursday and any updates will be reflected on their website.

Courts and government:

Broward and Miami-Dade county courts will be closed on Wednesday and Thursday.

Both Miami-Dade and Broward county governments continue to operate as usual.

Monroe County government offices will be closed on Wednesday.

Healthcare:

The Mount Sinai Medical Center will close its Primary and Specialty Care Offices in Key West and Marathon on that date to ensure the safety of patients and staff.

Normal operations will continue at the Miami Beach, Aventura, and Hialeah Emergency Departments, along with all primary and specialty care offices in Miami-Dade County.

The Florida Department of Health in Broward County closed its offices at noon, with plans to reopen at 8 a.m. Friday.

Florida Blue Centers:

All South Florida Blue Centers locations will be closed effective 3 p.m. on Wednesday, until further notice due to the impending impact of Hurricane Milton. This includes locations in Miami, Hialeah, North Miami Beach, Fort Lauderdale – Sawgrass, Palm Beach and Port St. Lucie. This also includes centers inside of Sanitas Medical Centers.

Sanitas Medical Centers:

All Palm Beach County Sanitas Medical Center locations will be closed on Thursday, October 10. This includes locations in Wellington, Boynton Beach, Boca Raton, West Palm Beach, Palm Beach Gardens, Lake Worth Primary Care (only).

Sanitas locations in Broward and Miami-Dade remain open.

Parks:

A number of state parks in Miami-Dade, Broward and the Florida Keys are closed.

Biscayne National Park will close at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Retail:

Publix and Winn-Dixie stores are operating at normal hours in South Florida.

The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale mall, located at 2414 E. Sunrise Blvd., will close at 5 p.m. Wednesday, with plans to reopen at noon Thursday.

Schools and colleges:

All three South Florida school districts — Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe — canceled classes for Wednesday.

Additionally, Broward, Monroe and Miami-Dade district officials said campuses would be closed on Thursday as well. Public schools will be open on Friday.

Archdiocese of Miami Catholic schools in Broward and Miami-Dade were set to close Wednesday and Thursday.

Florida International University plans to close its campus beginning at 5 p.m. Tuesday and will remain closed Wednesday.

Nova Southeastern University will close beginning at 5 p.m. on Tuesday and remain closed through Thursday.

The University of Miami canceled in-person classes for Wednesday and Thursday.

Broward College is suspending operations and canceling classes on Wednesday and Thursday.

Barry University is shutting down at 5 p.m. Tuesday and canceling classes Wednesday.

Miami Dade College will close on Wednesday and Thursday, and will resume normal operations on Friday.

The College of the Florida Keys said it “continues to closely monitor Hurricane Milton,” but has not announced any closures as of Tuesday morning.

Florida Memorial University will suspend classes at noon Tuesday through 8 a.m. Friday.

Universal Technical Institute, Miramar Camps will be closed on Thursday.

Transportation:

Brightline is shutting down train service between West Palm Beach and Orlando on Wednesday and Thursday with plans to “continue to monitor the storm and provide additional updates as needed.”

Palm Beach International Airport suspended all flight operations on Wednesday. Passengers are encouraged to check directly with their airline for flight updates

Miami, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood and Key West airports remained open. Officials urged flyers to check their flight statuses.

Public transit in Broward and Miami-Dade counties is fully operational, although Broward County Transit reports it will have minor adjustments Thursday.

Key Service Updates for BCT:

  • Regular Bus Service: All routes remain operational, except Route 6 northbound, which has a detour at SW 30th Ave and Collins Rd, and Routes 9 and 12, which have detours in both directions at Broward Central College, 3387 Davie Rd.
  • Express Coach Service: Fully operational.
  • Paratransit (TOPS): Currently running normal service, though due to inclement weather, there may be delays and extended wait times when calling the call center.
  • Community Shuttle services (operated in partnership with local cities) are operating as normally scheduled, except for 12 cities that have suspended their Community Shuttle services on Wednesday and Thursday. These cities are Coconut Creek, Dania Beach, Davie, Deerfield Beach, Hallandale Beach, Hillsboro Beach, Hollywood, Lauderhill, Lauderdale Lakes, Lighthouse Point, Pembroke Pines, and Tamarac.

In the Florida Keys, Key West Transit and the Lower Keys Shuttle will suspend service Wednesday and Thursday, county leaders said.

Additionally, the Tri-Rail commuter rail service will not run on Wednesday or Thursday.
