MIAMI – A member of the Miccosukee Tribe who faced federal charges in connection with an April shooting on the tribe’s reservation pleaded guilty to three counts, prosecutors announced Friday.
Sutanga Rex Cypress, 42, pleaded guilty to counts of assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to bodily harm, assault resulting in serious bodily injury and discharging a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence on Monday.

The shooting happened on the portion of the Miccosukee Reservation located in deep western Miami-Dade County, located in the Everglades off the Tamiami Trail.
Cypress was arguing with the victim outside his home on April 26 when he pulled out a gun, pointed it at the victim and then shot the victim in the abdomen, prosecutors allege.
The victim had to be airlifted to a local hospital.
According to prosecutors, Cypress faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years on the assault with a dangerous weapon charge. Additionally, he faces up to 10 years each in prison on the other two charges.
He’s set to be sentenced in Miami federal court on Dec. 9.
