Coral Springs woman said she was ‘at her wits’ end’ when she murdered husband, cops say

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – A Coral Springs woman told detectives she killed her husband inside their home over the Labor Day weekend over infidelity issues, according to court documents made public on Thursday.

One of Denise and Rohan Malcolm’s 14-year-old twin sons witnessed his father bleeding out on the floor of his bedroom after being shot multiple times, police said. Rohan Malcolm, 52, was alive at the time and clutching his shoulder, but his wife would tell detectives she fired one final gunshot, killing him as police arrived, an arrest report states.

Denise Malcolm, 45, would be arrested on a charge of first-degree murder.

According to Coral Springs police, the killing happened Saturday evening at the family’s home at 10501 NW 43rd St.

Authorities said one of the couple’s sons called 911 just after 6:30 p.m. to report that his father had been shot in the shoulder and was alive. Authorities said Rohan Malcolm suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

One of the twins told detectives “he was alone in his bedroom, eating Chinese food and listening to music with his headphones on, when he suddenly heard two or three loud bangs.”

Police said he “rushed out of his room” and saw his mother “standing in the doorway with a handgun in her hand.”

“He looked inside the bedroom to see (his father) bleeding from the shoulder,” the report states. “Denise told him to leave the area, so he went into the kitchen and called emergency services from his (redacted) cellular phone.”

Two Coral Springs police officers who arrived “took positions of cover outside the front of the residence and began giving loud verbal commands for the occupants to exit,” the report states.

The twins came out and “were kept safe,” police said. While giving further commands, officers “heard a loud bang” coming from inside the home; they believed the noise “to be a gunshot,” the report states.

Malcolm, in an interview with detectives, would describe it as the fatal shot, according to the report. Authorities said she described, in detail, why she decided to pull the trigger.

“For the past two years, (Rohan) had been unfaithful, leading to a breakdown in their (marriage),” police wrote in the report. “As a result, they slept in separate bedrooms and frequently engaged in heated verbal altercations. She did not trust him and was at her wits’ end with his lies and deceit.”

One of those arguments would end in her killing him, police said. The two had come back from a shopping trip to buy supplies for a planned Labor Day barbecue when Rohan Malcolm “unexpectedly announced that he was leaving to go to Port Saint Lucie with his friends,” the report states.

“Believing that (he) was lying and was actually going to see his (redacted), Denise became upset and started arguing with him,” the report states. “Denise and (Rohan) engaged in a heated verbal altercation that lasted between 45 minutes to an hour, culminating in Denise’s rage.”

Authorities said she went to her bedroom closet, retrieved a pistol and loaded a round into the chamber. The report states she then stood in the doorway and shot her husband multiple times.

“She closed the bedroom door and locked it, planning to kill herself after (Rohan) died,” the report states. “As she contemplated suicide, (he) was bleeding from the gunshot wounds he sustained. Denise advised that (her husband) said something to her that made her stop her thoughts of suicide and shoot him for a final time.”

Malcolm told detectives that her husband “was not alive after the last shot was fired,” according to the report. She would later be arrested.

As of Thursday, Malcolm was being held without bond in the Broward Sheriff’s Office Paul Rein Detention Facility in Pompano Beach.

No court hearings had been scheduled as of Thursday, according to online records.
