Young girl critical after driver hits her outside Miami pharmacy

Mother also hit

MIAMI – Medics rushed a young girl to the hospital after a driver hit her outside of a drugstore off Coral Way in Miami Monday afternoon.

Authorities said the driver hit her outside of the Navarro Discount Pharmacy at 2120 SW 32nd Ave. just before 4 p.m.

The 7-year-old girl was knocked unconscious and taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition, Miami police and fire spokespeople said. Authorities said her mother was also hurt but expected to survive.

6 p.m. report:

Witnesses said good Samaritans lifted the SUV to free the girl after the driver, a 92-year-old woman, lost control of her Nissan Rogue and crashed into the building, pinning the girl underneath.

“I believe that as we grow older, there are certain people that need to reevaluate their skills, especially when they’re driving. As a parent and as a grandfather, you know, my heart goes out to the family,” a man said.

Police said the driver remained at the scene.

Authorities haven’t yet said what led up to the crash, but said the driver will be cited for careless driving. Criminal charges aren’t likely, they said.

Editor’s note: A previous version of this story stated that the driver was cited for reckless driving. It has since been corrected to note that the driver was cited for careless driving.
