FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A convicted felon who Fort Lauderdale police say shot a man with the gun he just stole out of his truck may not have been banking on one thing when he opened fire: Cops say his victim had a second gun.

Sinclair Jamaal Ellis, 43, of Lauderdale Lakes, busted the window of the man’s Ford truck just before 11:30 p.m. Wednesday while it was parked at a business at 19 NW Seventh Ave. and then took his pistol, police said.

An arrest report states that the victim saw Ellis, who was convicted of burglary in 2023, breaking into his truck, and ran out and confronted him as Ellis left on his bicycle.

Police said as the victim yelled at him, Ellis pulled out the stolen Canik 9 mm handgun and shot the man in the leg.

According to the arrest report, however, Ellis was about to have a serious problem on his hands: The victim had another Canik 9 mm handgun.

The man pulled out the second gun and shot Ellis “multiple times.”

Both men were taken to Broward Health Medical Center for treatment and both men survived; Ellis required surgery and remained hospitalized in the intensive care unit in secure custody Friday.

Ellis is set to face charges of attempted murder, armed burglary and felon in possession of a firearm.

His mug shot was not available Friday as he remained in the hospital.
