MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – As hurricane season quickly approaches, emergency officials are working to get South Florida residents and visitors prepared.
Kevin Guthrie, the Executive Director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management, held a roundtable discussion with local emergency management officials at the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Training Facility on Monday to address the upcoming hurricane season.
Emergency management leaders from Miami-Dade and Broward counties attended the meeting to discuss the importance of organized evacuations, fuel shelters and resident preparation in what officials describe as a “supercharged season.”
“It’s supposed to be a supercharged season, maybe the highest on record that we’ve ever had,” said Guthrie. “We want to make sure that we are coming out, meeting with everybody, finding out what their needs are going to be, where their weak spots are, their strong points, where they need no state assistance, but make sure that we’re getting that information from each and every one of them.”
Officials also discussed the critical need for preparedness in the Florida Keys, including the possibility of evacuating the Keys and ensuring that the Seven Mile Bridge, which could potentially be replaced, facilitates a smooth evacuation process.
