FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Fort Lauderdale City Manager Greg Chavarria is stepping down.
The city’s top administrator made the announcement during Tuesday night’s city commission meeting, much to the shock of Mayor Dean Trantalis and other officials on the dais.
Chavarria, calling the move a “difficult decision,” said he’s resigning for family reasons.
“I have some ill family members that need attention and require my support and care at this time,” he said. “While I’m humbled to serve this awesome role, the everyday demands leave limited time and focus for my family.”
Chavarria said he will “remain available for the next 60 days as per my contract to assist in any way possible to ensure a smooth leadership transition” and will remain “forever indebted to the city.”
“We’ve accomplished tremendous milestones, and reached new heights of success that we can all take immense pride in,” he said. “It’s been an honor and privilege to lead our 2,800 hardworking staff members who (tirelessly) serve our community each and every day.”
Chavarria has been in the position since July 2022 after joining the city in 2020 as assistant city manager, according to his official biography.
“I’m at a loss for words right now,” Mayor Dean Trantalis said following the announcement. “So I don’t really want to say anything.”
Trantalis then adjourned the meeting.
