FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Broward County will hold off on evacuations, but will open storm shelters Thursday for residents who leave their homes ahead of Hurricane Irma.
Mayor Barbara Sharief made the announcement Tuesday and added that shelters are to be used as a last resort.

The county will continue to monitor Irma as it comes closer to South Florida and will make decisions on possible evacuations at a later time.
Superintendent announced Broward public schools will be closed Thursday and Friday, just like those in Miami-Dade.
