PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – Florida Power & Light estimated that as many as 9 million customers could lose power as Hurricane Irma impacted the state.
FPL president and CEO Eric Silagy said at a news conference Monday that crews are working as quickly as possible to restore power to affected people, but asked for everyone's patience.
"This is a business that will kill you if you don't do it properly, and as much as I want to get everybody up as quickly as possible, I don't want to get a call that unfortunately I've had before with families, where somebody is not coming home," he said.
As of 6 a.m. Tuesday, there were more than 393,000 customers without power in Palm Beach County, more than 486,00 customers without power in Broward County and more than 650,000 customers without power in Miami-Dade County.

There are two utility providers in the Keys -- Keys Energy Services, which provides electricity to more than 28,000 customers from Key West to the Seven Mile Bridge, and the Florida Keys Electric Cooperative Association, which services the middle and upper Keys.
At last check, Keys Energy Services reported more than 27,000 customers without power, while more than 17,000 Florida Keys Electric Cooperative Association customers were without power.

Silagy said crews will be working around the clock to restore electricity to every customer once they can safely do so after the storm passes.
FPL warned customers to not fall prey to crooks who pose as FPL workers to get inside homes.
FPL officials said workers will never ask to come inside your home and will be in trucks with the FPL logo marked on the side.
