A surge of tropical moisture set the stage for the severe weather in South Florida that prompted the Federal Aviation Administration to temporarily stop flights and flooded some roads on Monday afternoon.
The FAA reported temporary ground flight delays at both Miami International Airport and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. The order was from about 4:30 to 5:20 p.m.
It also affected traffic. There were some drivers stranded in flooded roads during the Monday afternoon rush-hour commute.
Stormwater also flooded an area of Biscayne Boulevard in Downtown Miami and the adjacent MacArthur Causeway ramps.
The storm also knocked down trees. Gonzalo Gonzalez said there are usually kids playing in the area where a tree that he and his neighbors worried fell in Miami.
Gonzalez said lighting had struck the tree before and pleas for an inspection to find out if it was safe went unanswered.
“We would have had multiple fatalities,” Gonzalez said.
According to the National Weather Service, there were 2 to 3 inches of rain in areas of Miami-Dade and Monroe counties.
Heavy rainfall will be possible on Tuesday and Wednesday morning. This is bad news for Christina Duenas who lives in a flood-prone area in northeastern Miami-Dade.
“Sadly, the water gets up even higher like halfway into our front yard,” Duenas said.
