BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – A flood advisory is in effect for parts of Broward County after heavy rain drenched the area Wednesday morning, creating hazardous conditions for drivers and residents.
The National Weather Service reported rainfall totals ranging from a quarter to half an inch in areas including Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Pompano Beach and Deerfield Beach. The advisory also extends northward to Boca Raton, as slow-moving storms are expected to continue to dump heavy rain throughout the areas until 11:45 a.m.
Meteorologists attribute the downpours to a persistent south-southeasterly breeze that has concentrated rainfall over northern Broward.
“The rain has been relentless in a short amount of time,” said Local 10 meteorologist Julie Durda. “These storms are slow-moving, making it difficult for roads to drain effectively.”
Traffic cameras captured water pooling on roadways, with low visibility making driving conditions dangerous. Rainfall is also impacting areas like Davie, Sunrise, and Hollywood, where beach cams showed over an hour of steady rain earlier in the day.
6 a.m. report:
Despite the deluge in Broward, conditions remain dry in Miami-Dade, where sunny skies and temperatures in the low 70s were reported. However, meteorologists warn that intermittent showers may develop throughout South Florida later in the day.
Flooding remains the primary concern as forecasts indicate an additional 1 to 2 inches of rain could fall by Thursday.
Officials urge residents in flood-prone areas to stay vigilant and avoid traveling through flooded streets.
