BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – Early morning downpours across South Florida were caused by a cold front expected to move through the region, with temperatures potentially dropping into the 50s by the weekend.
Heavy rain on Wednesday morning inundated areas like Melrose Park, Wilton Manors, Oakland Park, and Las Olas, with unofficial Doppler radar estimates showing rainfall totals of up to three inches in some neighborhoods, according to meteorologist John Gerard.
Poor drainage areas in northeastern Broward County were hit hardest, leaving roads temporarily impassable.
Noon report:
Gerard said rain totals ranged from three inches in Lauderdale Lakes to over 3.7 inches in Fort Lauderdale, and around 2.5 inches in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea. While some areas saw more rainfall than others, all were impacted by the floods.
“This morning’s rainfall was the result of a small disturbance that moved westward from the Atlantic overnight,” said Gerard. “Combined with moist tropical air, it created ideal conditions for heavy, localized downpours.”
Gerard also said the good news is the heavy rain has subsided, and the waters are receding. However, a few scattered showers are still possible through Wednesday afternoon as daytime heating continues, with a 30% chance of rain expected later, and residents are advised to keep umbrellas handy.
Temperatures in Miami are currently 81 degrees, with the rain expected to clear out by midnight. The upcoming cold front will bring cooler weather to South Florida just in time for the holiday weekend.
9 a.m. report:
Officials urge residents in flood-prone areas to stay vigilant and avoid traveling through flooded streets.
