South Florida residents struggle with recovery a month after historic flooding

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Just one month after historic rainfall and flooding in South Florida, the water and mess have finally been cleaned up, but the story remains one of recovery for many of its residents.

Residents at Aspen Lakes Apartments in northeast Miami-Dade, one of the hardest-hit communities, are still dealing with the aftermath of several days of downpours that caused a nearby lake to overflow.

“I have to work, I have kids, and it’s taken me a long time to clean out,” said one resident, who chose not to show her face. “The trauma is the worst part.”

For many, the damage is still visible. Humidity built up, damaged furniture remains, and some residents are still without their vehicles.

“Currently, it’s at the dealership still being fixed,” another resident said about his flood-damaged car.

As residents in Hallandale Beach, Aventura and across Miami-Dade County continue to deal with soggy walls and lingering damage, they wonder how future storms will be handled, especially with hurricane season still in its early stages.
