MIAMI – A heat advisory was issued Wednesday morning for Miami-Dade and Broward counties.
The advisory is in effect from 10 a.m. Wednesday through 8 p.m. Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service, the heat index in the area may go as high as 110 degrees at times.
Miami-Dade County officials urged residents to take extra precautions during the excessive heat event, especially those who are most at risk, including children, older adults, outdoor workers and people with chronic medical conditions.
“We want our residents and visitors to be aware of the potential risks of extreme heat so that we can all take the proper precautions to stay safe and healthy here in Miami-Dade County,” said County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “I encourage all residents to do a Heat Check: drink water, rest, and find shade if you are working or playing outdoors this week. The NWS advises the public to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room if possible and stay out of the sun.
Those who work outdoors are advised to wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing, take frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments and limit strenuous activities.
Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location, and if someone appears to be suffering a heat stroke, call 911.
