PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. – Both the Miami International Airport and the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport were under an advisory with ground stops issued for several hours per the Federal Aviation Administration due to thunderstorms on Monday.
The ground stops began at 4:45 p.m. and were to end at 6:15 p.m. They were extended to 7 p.m. and then to 8 p.m. At 8 p.m., the advisory was lifted.
The ground stops mostly affected flights coming into Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International and into Miami International Airport due to thunderstorms, while some departures from the airports were also affected by the weather.
Travelers were advised to check the status of their flights for delays.
According to Greg Chin, the communications director for the Miami-Dade Aviation Department, departures had been holding “on and off” since 1 p.m. on Monday due to lightning and storms.
More than 50 flights were canceled and 41 flights diverted due to the weather, according to Chin.

Also on Monday, heavy rain caused flooding problems on the roads.
The I-395 East ramp from US-1/NE 2nd Ave./Biscayne Boulevard was closed at 3:40 p.m.
There were reports of street flooding in Miami Beach at the intersection of Collins Avenue and 17th Street and at Collins Avenue between 22nd to 23rd St.
Local 10 Weather Authority Meterologist Luke Dorris is predicting the same heavy thunderstorm pattern continuing on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Local 10 Weather Authority is keeping an eye on Tropical Storm Bret in the Atlantic.
