Sunny Isles Beach on lockdown after storm leaves behind extensive damage

Lockdown could remain in effect for several days, police say

SUNNY ISLES BEACH, Fla. ā€“ Sunny Isles Beach has been placed on lockdown after Hurricane Irma left behind extensive damage throughout the city.

Officials said no one, including business owners and residents, will be permitted into Sunny Isles Beach until further notice, which could extend for several days.

Authorities said in a news release Monday that the city suffered severe damage to power lines, poles and other large fixtures.

Police said the roads are also dangerously littered with debris.

Only first responders and repair officials will be granted entry into the city.

Authorities said 85 percent of residents evacuated the city ahead of the storm.Ā
