KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. – The Rickenbacker Causeway was shut down Monday as the bridge leading into Key Biscayne is inspected for any damage sustained by Hurricane Irma.
Authorities said that no one, including residents, will be allowed into Key Biscayne until the inspection is complete.
The causeway is also closed to pedestrians and bicyclists.
A Village of Key Biscayne spokeswoman said in a news release that entry to the Key will be allowed by the end of the day, but officials do not yet have an exact time.
Authorities said the bridge that carries drivers to Key West suffered severe structural damage during the storm so they don't want to take any chances with the bridge leading into Key Biscayne.
Miami Beach residents have also been unable to return home, but city officials said they will be allowed entrance beginning at noon Tuesday.
