Hurricane Irma damages Ransom Everglades School field in Coconut Grove

Sail boat meant to be on Biscayne Bay ends up leaning against school

COCONUT GROVE, Fla. – Hurricane Irma's storm surge and strong winds pushed a sail boat on the football field of Ransom Everglades School, one of the most prestigious private schools in Miami-Dade County.

The school's main building and pool at 3575 Main Highway in Miami's Coconut Grove neighborhood did not appear to have structural damage Monday.

Irma — at one point the most powerful hurricane ever recorded in the open Atlantic -- sent many of the neighborhoods residents out of Miami before the storm hit.

The storm also cast boats ashore in surrounding waterfront properties and threw around some debris on the roads that are usually under the shade of thick-rooted canopy trees.

According to the Ransom Everglades' website, the school closed Monday until further notice
