Largely smooth sailing at Miami-Dade, Broward election HQs

DORAL, Fla. – No major issues have been reported in Miami-Dade or Broward counties on Election Day.

In Miami-Dade, bipartisan teams were publicly canvassing absentee ballots, checking signatures with an audience of observers present.

“Tonight, in particular, what we’re doing is looking at signatures on vote-by-mail ballots and it’s those that the staff has deemed to be insufficient or don’t exactly match,” Miami-Dade Supervisor of Elections Christina White said. “But they don’t have the authority to reject any ballot, and so they have to come to us for review. But that’s not the voters.”

Broward’s canvassing board was set to meet at 6 p.m.

Supervisor of Elections Joe Scott reported glitches with the county’s elections website but said those problems don’t affect ballot counting.

“Three-hundred-and-fifty-eight precincts open, and everything is working smoothly,” Scott said. “So far, we’ve had a couple of things that have happened website related, web tools, third-party web tools, that have not functioned properly today and we actually made some adjustments to try to make it easier for people to find the critical information they need, one of them being finding their precincts.

“These are third-party tools that we have that help get information out to people. They have nothing to do with, with tabulation of ballots or counting of votes, or anything like that. These are simply informational tools that are used to help people find their precinct or where they need to go to vote on election day. That’s the purpose of these tools. And the tools have probably gotten a lot more volume than the vendor anticipated.”

Voters have until 5 p.m. Thursday to cure any signature issues on their mail-in ballots. Those with problems will be notified.
