James Reyes selected Democratic nominee for Miami-Dade sheriff

Miami-Dade County voters pick nominees for first sheriff in over 60 years

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Miami-Dade County is holding its first sheriff election in over 60 years, with 11 Republican and four Democratic candidates competing in the Primary Election.

James Reyes was selected the Democratic nominee on Tuesday, with 46% of the votes.

“When we were out in the community, the support was overwhelming,” Reyes said after his win Tuesday night. “I really fed off that energy for eight long months.”

According to his campaign website, “Chief James Reyes’ story begins with a journey for freedom, escaping the grips of communism in Cuba to find a new home in Hialeah, Florida. His family’s pursuit of the American Dream laid the foundation for his deep-rooted commitment to duty, service, and community. Those values drive his dedication to public safety and neighborhood safety.

“With 25 years of unwavering commitment to public safety, James Reyes has risen through the ranks to become a well-respected leader in the law enforcement community. As the current Chief of Public Safety in Miami-Dade, he oversees a diverse array of critical departments, including Miami-Dade Police, Fire Rescue, and Corrections.”

Reyes will face Republican nominee Rosie Cordero-Stutz in the General Election in November.
