Incumbent Gregory Tony secures Democratic nomination for Broward sheriff

Tony will face Independent candidate Charles Edward Whatley in November

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. ā€“ Incumbent Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony secured the Democratic nomination for sheriff on Tuesday, and will face Independent candidate Charles Edward Whatley in the General Election in November.

Tony defeated candidates Steve Geller, David Howard and Al Pollock in the Primary Election, winning 50% of the votes.

ā€œIā€™m truly honored to once again be selected by the Democratic Party to serve as their nominee. For approximately six years, Iā€™ve focused on reforming the Broward Sheriffā€™s Office into the finest public safety organization in the country,ā€ Tony said in a statement. ā€œIā€™m extremely grateful for the peopleā€™s continued trust and confidence in my administration. My devotion to the people of Broward County will remain steadfast. I will always prioritize public safety over politics.ā€

Tony was sworn in as sheriff in January 2019 after Gov. Ron DeSantis removed then-Sheriff Scott Israel from the position following the Parkland school shooting in which 17 people were killed.

According to Tonyā€™s campaign website, his career began 18 years ago at the Coral Springs Police Department.

Gellerā€™s campaign website states that he was a law enforcement officer for over 30 years, holding various leadership roles.

Howard, meanwhile, was born and raised in Broward County and served more than 30 years in the U.S. Air Force and Air Force Reserves.

Pollock also has more than 30 years of public safety experience, according to his campaign website, and has held various positions in the Broward Sheriffā€™s Office, including as a colonel, watch commander and detective. He also served in the U.S. Marines.

ā€œAs we move forward into the general election, I share a message of hope and unity for our country, state, and for Broward,ā€ Tony said. ā€œAs partisan politics continue to polarize and divide our nation, Iā€™d encourage other elected officials and leaders to focus on building unity versus division. Itā€™s easy to tear down but the true sum of a person can be seen in what they attempt to build up.ā€
