Vote 2024: Local elections take spotlight as voters head to polls

SURFSIDE, Fla. – With Donald Trump as the presumptive Republican nominee and Democrats not holding a presidential primary in Florida in 2024, local races will be the most consequential items on the ballot in Tuesday’s Florida elections.

Polls open at 7 a.m. across the state and close at 7 p.m.

Republicans will hold a presidential primary, but Trump is already the presumptive nominee.

There are a handful of local races, including a contentious mayoral election in a Miami-Dade County town.

The three mayoral races occurring in South Florida are for Surfside, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea and Pembroke Pines.

Commission races are also being decided Tuesday in Surfside, Hillsboro Beach, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea and Pembroke Pines.

In Sea Ranch Lakes, two referendums are being voted on – whether to amend the Charter to provide a Village Council with five elected members instead of seven and whether to amend the Charter “to provide that an affirmative vote of a majority of members of the Village Council present at a meeting where a quorum is established is required to adopt any resolution or ordinance of the Village.”

South Miami residents will be voting on a referendum to authorize or not authorize leases exceeding 50 years for city property involving City Hall redevelopment.

You can view the results here after the polls close Tuesday evening.
