Presidential election: Here is why eastern Miami-Dade is celebrating and western Miami-Dade is not

MIAMI – Data shows the majority of voters who supported President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence live in western Miami-Dade County. The supporters of projected President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris were in eastern Miami-Dade.

There were exceptions to the geographic divide. Some of the wealthiest areas in eastern Miami-Dade sided with Trump and agricultural areas in western Miami-Dade sided with Biden. Cuban-American and Colombian-American neighborhoods sided with Trump and African-American, Haitian-American, and Mexican-American neighborhoods sided with Biden.

The voter turnout in Miami-Dade County was a high 74.57%. The official summary data report from the supervisor of elections shows there were 1,563,572 voters registered and 1,165,883 voted at 866 precincts. The data shows 617,647, or 53.31%, voted for Biden, and 532,734 voters, or 45.98%, sided with Trump.

WESTERN MIAMI-DADE

About 50 western Miami-Dade precincts each showed more than 70% of voters supported Trump. He had massive support in the city of Hialeah and in the Kendall neighborhoods. The Cuban-American and the Colombian-American vote dominate the neighborhoods in these areas.

There was a precinct near Kendall Regional Medical Center where 82.69% of voters supported Trump’s reelection. In Miami-Dade’s Country Walk neighborhood, 78.35% of voters also supported Trump.

There were exceptions in Homestead, Florida City, Richmond Heights and Miami Gardens where Biden had strong support. Nearly 90% of voters at the Florida City/Homestead Neighborhood Service Center precinct and about 87% of voters at the Florida City Hall precinct voted for Biden.

EASTERN MIAMI-DADE

Indian Creek, the wealthy tiny island with 41 residential home sites and the Indian Creek Country Club, was among the exceptions. Trump had 42 out of the 53 votes there. The majority of voters in Bal Harbour, Surfside and Sunny Isles also supported Trump.

In Miami Beach, 19 out of 24 precincts reported Biden received more than 50% of the votes. Nearly 69% of the voters at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden in South Beach chose Biden.

Biden was not as popular with Miami Beach voters in five precincts including the St. Johns on the Lake Methodist Church and Temple Beth Sholom precincts. The barrier island city also includes voters from Venetian Islands, Star Islands, and the ultra-private Fisher Island.

Precincts in Miami’s historic Black neighborhoods had a strong showing for Biden. More than 90% of voters sided with Biden at the Culmer Neighborhood Service Center in Overtown, 90% at the Carrie P. Meek Art Center in Liberty City, and nearly 90% at the Elizabeth Virrick Park in Coconut Grove.
