2 die after SUV crashes into canal along Alligator Alley in Broward County

Fatal crash backs up traffic on I-75 for hours

DAVIE, Fla. – The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash Sunday afternoon on Alligator Alley, a section of Interstate 75 in western Broward County.

FHP Sgt. Mark Wysocky said a man and a woman died after their car plunged into a canal.

"The vehicle sustained a left-rear tread separation, which caused the driver to lose control," Wysocky said.

Wysocky said good Samaritans tried to rescue the victims, but the water was too deep.

"The water's estimated to be about 40 feet deep in that area," Wysocky said.

Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities haven't been released.

The crash caused traffic backups on I-75 for several hours Sunday.
