SUNRISE, Fla. — At least one person has died and two others were injured on Saturday morning following an overnight crash involving two vehicles that temporarily knocked out electricity in the area, authorities said.
Sunrise police said the crash happened at about 1:53 a.m. at University Drive and Northwest 25th Court. The two vehicles were badly damaged, and debris was scattered across the roadway and into the nearby Shell gas station.
Authorities said three people were transported to Broward General Medical Center as trauma alerts, and one of them has since died. Their ages, identities and current conditions were not immediately available.
Officials said at least one of the cars reportedly struck a utility pole, knocking out power to the surrounding area. As many as 33,700 customers were reported without electricity following the crash, according to Florida Power & Light.
FPL crews restored power about 90 minutes later.
The intersection was closed for several hours as police investigated the crash and crews worked to clear the scene. The roadway has since reopened.
Sunrise police said the crash remains under investigation and that no further information was immediately available.
Drivers in the area should continue to use caution as investigators work to determine what led to the crash.
