New traffic pattern begins on MacArthur Causeway amid construction project

MIAMI – A new traffic pattern began Wednesday morning on the westbound lanes of the MacArthur Causeway, just west of Watson Island, and on the ramp to Exit 2, Biscayne Boulevard.

“The merge on the right lane, just west of Watson Island, will be removed and the exit to SR 5/US 1/Biscayne Boulevard will be moved approximately one-quarter of a mile further to the east,” a news release from the Florida Department of Transportation stated. “The exit-only lane on the right will be separated with a temporary concrete barrier wall from the three lanes to the left that will continue west.”

FDOT officials said there will be signs, electronic message boards and markings on the pavement that will indicate that the right lane is for exiting traffic only and the three left lanes are for drivers continuing west.

“The three lanes continuing west will merge to two lanes east of Biscayne Boulevard and continue west to Interstate 395 (I-395),” the news release stated. “Drivers exiting Port Miami must continue to use the Port Boulevard Bridge, as currently signed, to access SR 5/US 1/Biscayne Boulevard and the downtown area.”

The bicycle lane on the MacArthur Causeway will also be closed for the time being.

Bicyclists will be detoured through the existing Parrot Jungle Trail bicycle route onto the protected sidewalk on the MacArthur Causeway.

The change to the traffic pattern comes amid an $840 million construction project for I-395, I-95 and the Dolphin Expressway in a partnership between FDOT and the Greater Miami Expressway Agency.

The project is expected to be completed in late 2027.
