Closures in place as crews make second attempt at rehabilitating Rickenbacker Causeway flyover bridge

MIAMI ā€“ A second attempt at rehabilitating the Rickenbacker Causeway flyover bridge began Monday after a first attempt in April left drivers caught in traffic for more than four hours.

Right now, the ramp from the westbound Rickenbacker Causeway to southbound US-1 is closed.

The closure will last until July 20 at 6 a.m.

ā€œDuring this closure, the ramp from westbound Rickenbacker Causeway to northbound SR 9A/I-95 will remain open,ā€ the Florida Department of Transportation said in a news release.

From 10 p.m. on July 21 to 6 a.m. on Aug. 3, the ramp from westbound Rickenbacker Causeway to northbound SR 9A/I-95 will be closed.

ā€œDuring this closure, the ramp from westbound Rickenbacker Causeway to southbound SR 5/US 1 will remain open,ā€ the news release stated.

The project involves replacing pavement markings and markers on roads that are over 50 years old.

ā€œThese particular bridges are over 50 years old. If you drive the area, you will notice that itā€™s not a smooth ride and thereā€™s two spans per bridge that are gonna be somewhat reconstructed,ā€ said Mario L. Cabrera, P.E., District 6 Construction Engineer.
