MIAMI-DADE, Fla. – Two traffic incidents involving police officers caused gridlock on Interstate 95 in Miami-Dade County on Saturday afternoon, according to Miami-Dade County Fire Rescue.
A Miami-Dade police officer traveling north in the express lanes of I-95 shortly after 2 p.m. Saturday observed a three-vehicle traffic crash involving a black Mercedes Benz SUV, a blue Chevrolet Cruz and a white Jeep Liberty, police said. The officer had stopped to render aid.
While speaking to the people outside the patrol vehicle, police said, a black Honda Civic traveling north in the express lanes went out of control and swerved right, striking the police vehicle and the Chevrolet.
Detectives said the driver of the Honda had worked a double shift and was on his way home when he lost control of his vehicle, causing the crash.
The occupants of the Mercedes and the Chevrolet were also struck as they stood outside their vehicles, police said. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel took the occupants of the Mercedes and the Chevrolet to Northshore Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police said the officer was not injured.
Meanwhile, on the southbound lanes of I-95, a city of Miami Police Department motorman collided with a car. The Miami police officer crashed near to Northwest 95th Street.
Miami police identified the motorman as Officer Horace Jones.
"He received road rash and a possible head injury," Lt. Javi Ortiz said.
