MIAMI – Two teenagers were killed in a crash on the Dolphin Expressway that happened around 2:30 a.m Saturday.
The driver, Alejandra Maria Gomez, 17, and Jenifer Garcia, 18, died in the crash. Gomez only had her learner's permit and wasn't supposed to be driving unless there was a licensed driver, older than 21, in the car.
Florida Highway Patrol said Tatiana Davila, 18, was underwent surgery at Ryder Trauma Center and was in good spirits Sunday evening.
Troopers said the 2000 Saturn swerved onto the concrete barrier before hitting the support post for an overheard sign on the Dolphin Expressway, and splitting in two. Officers found Davila still strapped into her seat belt after the car was in pieces.
Family members said the three were heading home from South Beach.
"She was a straight A student, she always wore her seatbelt, she was a very good girl, she was never bad," said Virginia Lugo, Gomez's sister.
"I just feel like it's a lie and she's going to come here to come see me and give me a hug. She was my best friend. She was everything to me," added Lugo.
Police did not say whether speed or alcohol played a role in the crash.
The expressway was closed in both directions between Northwest 12th Avenue and Northwest 27th Avenue for more than six hours after the crash.
