The permit was approved over the objections of environmentalists who argue it will continue the degradation of Florida’s natural resources, especially Ginnie Springs. Ginnie Springs is a popular area of water for swimming and recreational activities for locals and visitors. The Suwannee River Water Management District Governing Board approved the permit application from Seven Springs Water Co. to aid Nestlé with expanding its bottled-water operations in Gilchrist County. It is projected that Nestlé will tap 400 million gallons of water a year from the Ginnie Springs area.

Andrew Charles Eddy, 30, was snorkeling on a reef along with family on a private boat near Marathon in the Florida Keys when witnesses said he was attacked “almost immediately” after entering the water at Sombrero Key Light. Eddy was airlifted from Marathon Airport to Miami’s Ryder Trauma Center Sunday morning at approximately 10:30 a.m. for a wound to his shoulder while snorkeling near the Overseas Highway. Investigators said there was no fishing or chumming in the water near where the group was snorkeling. Shark attacks are rare occurrences especially in areas like Sombrero Key, where fishing and chumming aren’t allowed.
