SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. – A social studies teacher at a Southwest Miami-Dade high school is accused of having a romantic relationship with a student, which has led to his arrest and his being fired by the school district. Miami-Dade Schools Police Department arrested Rafael Birriel, 39, a teacher at Coral Reef Senior High School following an investigation into improper behavior, which involved a student. The school district said that Birriel had no other issues in his 13 years of employment with Miami-Dade Public Schools. The victim told police that most of the conversations she had with the teacher were through the messaging app, Discord. AdOver the course of the year, police said Birriel told the girl he loved her as well as his sexual attraction and intentions toward her.

And nearly all of the continental United States is looking at warmer than normal spring, except for tiny parts of the Pacific Northwest and southeast Alaska, which makes drought worse. “It’s definitely something we’re watching and very concerned about.”NOAA expects the spring drought to hit 74 million people. A pickup truck was pinned under a semi on Sunday afternoon on Krome Avenue. SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. – A pick-up truck with one person inside ended up pinned underneath a semi-truck Sunday afternoon, according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. The accident happened at approximately 4:45 p.m. near Southwest 88 Street and Krome Avenue. According to fire rescue, the driver was trapped inside and had to be extricated from the pinned truck. The cause of the accident and the driver’s condition is not known at this time.

SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. – A southwest Miami-Dade woman told Local 10 News about how she and her husband helped a man who had been shot by his grandson. It all happened Saturday morning when a man, later identified as 19-year-old Ruben Warren Williams, went on a shooting rampage, according to police. In surveillance video, you can see the man limping. He’s shooting everybody.’”Shortly before the man showed up at the Pelaez’s door, police said Williams shot his grandfather, his aunt and his cousin. On surveillance video, you can hear the man say, “He’s shooting all through the house.” Then Pelaez asks if Williams is still in the house.

SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. – A crime caught on camera shows two brazen thieves that ambushed a driver who was ordering food at a Pollo Tropical. One of the robbers was seen pointing a gun at the victim at the drive-thru near Southwest 152nd Street and Southwest 116th Avenue on Dec. 9. The other thief could be seen on surveillance video banging on the passenger door with a brick. That same car was caught on other surveillance cameras just hours before casing a jewelry store on Southwest 122th Avenue and 8th Street . The men waited for the victim to leave the jewelry store, where he was followed to the fast-food restaurant.

SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. – The day after a shootout during rush hour in Southwest Miami Dade, police said surveillance video from a nearby café is serving as a key component in the investigation. That’s when shots were fired from an SUV into a white BMW sedan. On the video, the passenger doors of the SUV open and gunfire can be seen hitting the sedan. Sky 10 over the scene captured the sedan after the shooting with all doors open and bullet holes in the front windshield. (See the surveillance video below.)

Florida Highway Patrol tried to stop a reckless driver when two men got out of the car and took off. SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. – A large police perimeter was set up in Southwest Miami Dade after a police chase and crash around 10:40 a.m. Friday. Florida Highway Patrol said the incident started on the Florida Turnpike in the area of Southwest 112 Avenue when a trooper tried to stop a reckless driver who sped away. People said they saw the men knocking on doors at the South Pointe Apartments and called police. Law enforcement set up a perimeter and both men were caught shortly after.

SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. – A robber entered a Chase bank in Kendall and took an undisclosed amount of money Thursday. The FBI released photographs from the robbery that took place at approximately 1:30 p.m. at a Chase Bank branch located at 13745 Southwest 152 St. According to the FBI, there were customers in the bank at the time of the robbery, but there were no injuries. The amount of money taken was not released. Anyone with information is urged to call the FBI at (754) 703-2000.

SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. – The new Conservation Action Center at Zoo Miami opens to the public on Saturday, Jan. 16, but Local 10 was able to get a sneak peek at the hands-on experience. Zoo Miami’s Ron Magill said the idea of the center is to introduce one of the “major pillars of the zoo and that’s conservation, but in a fun way.”There’s plenty to see and do, all with the goal of making it an interactive experience with games like Habitat Whack a Mole and Mating Game. There’s also “What’s the Poop?” where visitors can race to see how fast you can scoop the “poop” into compost bins. So, you can come in here and play a variety of games — Interactive games — to try to get involved and understand why it’s so important and what we do every day to conserve wildlife,” Magill said. The first 500 visitors into the center on Saturday and Sunday will receive a free gift, according to the Zoo.

Delta, United and Alaska airlines said Thursday, Jan. 14, 2021 they will bar passengers flying to Washington from putting guns in checked bags. The moves follow the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol by supporters of President Donald Trump and politically tinged confrontations on some flights. American Airlines is bringing back a ban on serving alcohol on flights to and from the Washington area — flights go dry starting Saturday through next Thursday. Price also said that it is “a good idea” to prohibit passengers from putting guns in checked bags if they are flying to Washington. Federal law allows passengers to put guns in checked baggage if they are unloaded and in a locked, hard-sided case, although airlines have the discretion to ban guns.

SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. – A deadly car crash in Southwest Miami-Dade claimed the life of one person and sent three others to area trauma centers. Miami-Dade Police said the single-car accident happened along Southwest 238 Street, just east of the Florida Turnpike on Sunday at approximately 5 p.m.Nashira Amundarian witnessed the crash and immediately called 911. The 4th person involved in the crash, a 22-year-old male, died at the scene. SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. – A one-car crash in Southwest Miami Dade sent 5 people to the hospital early Saturday morning. Miami-Dade Police said they responded to a vehicle crash in the area of SW 128th Street and 137th Avenue. When Local 10 arrived at the scene, a 4-door Infiniti was wrecked and mangled after crashing into a palm tree. SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. – Two people were shot in southwest Miami-Dade Sunday night after police said that the victims and the shooter had an argument at a gathering along Southwest 109th Avenue. Miami-Dade police said around 6:30 p.m. Sunday, the victims were followed about a mile from the gathering to Southwest 107th Avenue and Old Cutler Road. Three people were inside another car when they shot at the vehicle. A 54-year-old woman, who was in the back seat of the car, was struck by gunfire in the head and hip. Both victims were transported to Jackson South Medical Center, where the woman is reportedly in critical but stable condition.

NORTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. – The owner of a Northwest Miami-Dade restaurant reportedly tackled a gunman who shot into the air injuring two people at the Gran Parada Café and Restaurant. She said he was swaying back and forth and acting “bizarrely.” That’s when he pulled out a gun and fired into the air, the woman said. It was then that the restaurant owner jumped up from the bar and tackled the gunman at the door. Miami-Dade police said one person struck was in the ankle and a bullet grazed the other victim. Two people were seen being taken inside Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. – The post office in Princeton, where video surfaced which appeared to show mail containing possible vote-by-mail ballots stranded for at least a week, might not be the only place with a ballot pile up. McGee and community leaders spoke to Local 10 outside of the Princeton post office on Saturday. “There is a similar situation playing out at the Homestead postal service and the same issues are also happening within the Florida City post office,” McGee said. “The postal service is aware of an online video alleging mishandling of ballots at a post office in south Miami-Dade County. Postal Service, they did reassure us that those vote-by-mail ballots would reach the Supervisor of Elections office by Tuesday, Election Day.

SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. – Three boys, ages 9, 14 and 17-years-old who were found Sunday in the courtyard of an apartment complex and all with gunshot wounds, may have been the only ones involved in the shooting. The shooting in Goulds at the Arthur Mays Public Housing project happened around 3 p.m. Sunday. The 9-year-old boy was shot in the stomach and was airlifted to Kendall Regional Medical Center. Police have not released many details about the shooting, about the gun, or what the three boys were doing with the gun, or where they got it. The 9-year-old boy remains in critical condition.

SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. – A shooting in the Goulds neighborhood has left two teens and a young boy injured. Miami-Dade Police responded Sunday afternoon to the courtyard of a residential community regarding several people shot near Southwest 216th Street and Southwest 113th Avenue, just north of Goulds Park. When police arrived around 3 p.m., they said they discovered three male shooting victims — a 9, 14 and 17-year-old. Detectives did say that the key to solving the case will come from neighbors and other people who were in the area when the shooting happened. “At this point in time, we don’t have a lot of information, so we’re going to require the community’s assistance in providing additional information,” Welch said.

SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. – The finish line was Tropical Park for a large caravan that went across Southwest Miami-Dade on Sunday in a show of support for the Biden-Harris ticket. Honking car horns, waving flags and cheering, Tropical Park turned into a parade of nations — mostly Hispanics — here to voice their opinions about the upcoming election. “This rhetoric of them being socialist or communist, that’s just to instill fear in the people,” Olvera, a Biden supporter, said. “I am a registered Republican — voted all my life — except I voted by mail. SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. – Homicide detectives are still working on trying to find out what led up to a fatal shooting inside a Walmart in the Westchester area of Southwest Miami-Dade. But witnesses and customers are telling Local 10 that it may have been the result of a disagreement over COVID-19 guidelines and restrictions inside the store. “There is a possibility that it was about distancing," one witness told Local 10. Anna Grant, a witness inside the store, said. Our hearts go out to those close to the victim and those affected by the events of this morning.”

SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. – The family of a 19-year-old teenager on a motorcycle who was killed in a hit and run, gathered at the spot Thursday where their loved one died. The person who hit the motorcyclist did get out of the car, but instead of helping, police said the driver left the car behind and ran off. The incident happened on Sunday, Sept. 13 around 7:30 p.m. when police said a 2012 Nissan Altima struck Borders' motorcycle near Southwest 282nd Street and 127th Avenue in Southwest Dade. “The driver unfortunately did not survive the accident — the passenger also suffered serious bodily injury,” Detective Jeff Childers of the Miami-Dade Police Department said. “Just imagine if that was your loved one out there and you wanted to know who did this.

SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. – Two people were shot Thursday in the late afternoon. Police have cordoned off an area in southwest Miami-Dade and are searching for a suspect. Neighbors reported hearing multiple gunshots in the area of Southwest 101st Avenue and 172nd Street around 4 p.m. A man had been shot in the leg and a woman in the buttocks, according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. Police have blocked off a large area of 172nd Street.

SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. – Authorities are investigating after two men in their early 20s were shot and killed in broad daylight, not far from a police substation and just across the street from a community center and park in Miami-Dade County. A 17-year-old girl was also shot and injured. Two bodies could be seen covered in yellow tarps in the Southwest Miami Dade neighborhood, where crime scene tape blocked off streets. When officers arrived, they discovered two men in their 20s shot dead and a 17-year-old-girl with severe injuries after she, too, was hit by the gunfire. A lot of people are moving around; somebody had to see something,” Detective Alvaro Zabaleta with Miami-Dade Police said.

SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. – The motive behind a shooting Saturday morning that left one man dead outside of a Southwest Miami-Dade Shell gas station was robbery, according to Miami-Dade police. Police said that the thief confronted the victim and then shot him around 8 a.m. at the gas station off Southwest 152nd Street and 122nd Avenue. Investigators spent most of Saturday on the scene, placing several evidence markers next to shell casings. They were also reviewing surveillance video from both inside and outside the gas station. While police would not divulge details to Local 10 as to why they were focusing their attention at the home, they did confirm that it was linked to their search for the gunman in the Shell gas station shooting.

They received an alert that something wasn’t right at their Southwest Miami-Dade house. That’s when then rushed back to see much of their house engulfed in flames. “I couldn’t imagine them every day working and having no home to go home to,” Ferreiro said. The Apathy family said the surprise was wonderful and emotional when they received the keys to the temporary home. "It's such a huge weight off of our shoulders and we can just relax," Ayleen said.

SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. – Two nurses, working long and tough hours during COVID-19, left their Southwest Miami-Dade house for a half hour and came home to a devastating scene. So we were only gone a half hour,” Ayleen Apathy said. Ryan and Ayleen Apathy and their two sons lost everything including their beloved 10-year-old dog, Mack. That’s all we wanted,” Ryan said. SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. – A 4 a.m. fire destroyed a house on SW 43rd Terrace. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said when the first units arrived on the scene, the house was entirely engulfed in flames. No injuries were reported and people living in the house were able to escape. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. – Miami-Dade police are investigating two deaths that happened within just a few miles of each other. Around 9 a.m. Monday, police found a man shot in the 1600 block of S.W. 197th Ave.A short time later, another man was found dead next to a Jeep along S.W. 187th Avenue and S.W. Police say despite the close proximity they are investigating the deaths as separate incidents.

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. - A fatal crash closed a stretch of the westbound lanes of Kendall Drive. The crash occurred in the westbound lanes near Southwest 142nd Avenue. A second vehicle involved in the crash plowed through a hedge and came to a rest in the parking lot of a nearby apartment complex. Nocella said it's probably too soon to tell what passenger reaction will be once the 737 Max returns to service. A spokesperson said that if a passenger does not want to fly the 737 Max, "we will offer them full flexibility." It's unclear when the 737 Max will return to the skies.

Announcing the cancellations so far in advance gives American Airlines time to assign new aircraft to 737 Max routes or rebook customers whose flights were canceled. United Airlines took a similar step Friday, canceling 90 daily flights due to the 737 Max until December 19. The 737 Max was grounded worldwide in March following two fatal crashes in less than six months.

KOMO via CNN(CNN) - United Airlines has pushed back its flight cancellations due to the Boeing 737 Max grounding until December 19. United had previously canceled flights through November 3. The planes were grounded in March after an automatic safety feature on the 737 Max -- the company's best-selling plane -- was tied to fatal crashes in Ethiopia and Indonesia. Southwest, which has more 737 Max planes in its fleet than any other US airline, has canceled about 180 daily flights through January 5. American, the other US carrier with the 737 Max in its fleet, has thus far only canceled about 115 flights a day through November 2.

American, United and Southwest have canceled hundreds of daily flights following the worldwide grounding of the 737 Max in March after two fatal crashes. But American flew one daily route from Oakland to its home base at Dallas-Fort Worth and back. It is now apparent that the 737 Max will be grounded through at least late this year. Last week Southwest announced its canceled flights would be extended until at least October 1.

Unlike American Airlines, United and Southwest, Delta Air Lines was not forced to cancel flights in the quarter due to the grounding of the Boeing 737 Max because the airline doesn't own that plane. Delta said that its total revenue grew between 8% and 8.5% for the quarter that ended Saturday. Profits should also hit the top end of its guidance since profit margins should be about 1% better than expected. Shares of American, United and Southwest were also narrowly higher on Delta's signal of a strong fare environment.
