She and members of the support group have been doing welfare checks on the public housing residents. āBullets have actually landed on top of the roof of these seniorsā house,ā Dukes said. Two police officers walked around the neighborhood with the Mothers Fighting for Justice members.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel took the man to Jackson South Medical Center. Zabaleta said dispatch received a report of an "apparent" armed robbery, but officers later classified the case as a shooting.

Miami-Dade police detectives identified the victim as Nathaniel Hearns. Officers found him dead Saturday night near the intersection of Southwest 176th Street, also known as West Indigo Street, and Homestead Avenue. The crime scene was near the Perrine Community Action Center and the Kerr Memorial United Methodist Church.
