LA BREA, Trinidad - Earlier this month, United States Naval Ship Comfort, a hospital ship on a humanitarian medical mission to help Venezuelan refugees, sailed into the Gulf of Paria, an inland sea between the island of Trinidad and the east coast of Venezuela.
The United Nations estimates Trinidad and Tobago, a dual-island Caribbean nation, hosts more than 40,000 Venezuelans.
Peter McIntyre, the Navy medical site coordinator, said the Venezuelan refugees had access to physicians from the U.S. Navy, Air Force and Army.
According to Lt. Gen. Michael Plehn, deputy commander of U.S. Southern Command, it was the first time the hospital ship had visited Trinidad and Tobago since 2007.
The hospital ship, which has been on a five-month deployment, has also made stops in Costa Rica, Peru, Panama, Colombia and Curacao.
