SUGARLOAF KEY, Fla. – A man and a woman escaped a house fire Monday night on Sugarloaf Key, authorities confirmed Tuesday. According to Monroe County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Adam Linhardt, the fire occurred around 11 p.m. in the 17000 block of Oleander Lane. The man told a responding deputy that a fire erupted on the back deck of the home, but by the time he grabbed a fire extinguisher, the flames had grown much stronger. Sugarloaf Boulevard and Oleander Lane were temporarily closed as Monroe County firefighters battled the blaze.

Monroe County Sheriff’s Office reported that it was around 1:54 p.m. when marine patrol was contacted about the floating packages south of Sugarloaf Key. U.S. Border Patrol was alerted since the packages were discovered in federal waters and the cocaine was then taken by border patrol. Sugarloaf Key is about 17 miles north of Key West via U.S. 1. Enforcement officers stated that the amount of cocaine found was approximately 33.7 kilograms or 74 pounds.

The effort would save only a handful of homes and officials warn it may be impractical to prevent flooding. “Does it make sense, for example, to spend $10, $12, $15 million dollars to upgrade a road for two or three homes,” Monroe County Administrator Roman Gastesi said. “Probably not.”Residents in the area were handing out fliers encouraging neighbors to attend a County Commission meeting on Dec. 11 to specifically address flooding issues.

Joseph McNeal, 49, of Sugarloaf Key, was arrested Thursday afternoon on charges of battery and resisting arrest without violence. Monroe County Sheriff's Office spokesman Adam Linhardt said McNeal met the women at a bar on Duval Street. The women told deputies that McNeal placed his hands around one of the women's throats and pushed her into a television, breaking it.
