A student was taken into custody Friday afternoon after a loaded gun was found on the campus of a high school in Broward County, authorities confirmed.

Stranahan High School Principal Michelle Padura took Local 10 News on a tour of the school on Thursday after areas in Broward County received a record 25.91 inches of rain last week.

But a major upcoming performance is in jeopardy and it’s at no fault of their own. But the prestigious band is dealing with a major issue concerning their upcoming trip to Tampa to perform in the city’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade. Stranahan’s marching band has accepted the very same invitation for three years in a row. The band also has set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for their upcoming performance in London.

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. - The marching bands at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland and Stranahan High School in Fort Lauderdale received very special invitations Monday. A formal invitation was issued Monday by British dignitaries for the schools' marching bands to perform in the 2021 London New Year's Day parade. "Our students -- a lot of them don't leave the state, and we are talking about leaving the country," Stranahan High School principal Michelle Padura said. Stranahan band leader Carlos Redman is making sure his musicians and dancers are ready for the big performance. The marching bands will join 8,000 performers from around the world for the event.

The school at 1800 SW 5th Place has been undergoing renovations. According to Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Stephen Gollan, the small fire happened after there was roofing work done. Nadine Drew, a spokesperson for the Broward County Public Schools, said the minor fire will not be interrupting the start of classes on Wednesday. The high school has about 1,400 students and 65 teachers.
