MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Additional COVID-19 vaccine sites are opening up across South Florida as the state prepares to lower its age requirements for those wanting to get the shot. “It’s a one day shot, and then we move around the county, and we set-up different places that we can do it,” said Miami-Dade County Emergency Management Director Frank Rollason. Coming up on Monday, the state will lower the age cutoff for vaccination to those 50 and older, no questions asked. SOUTH MIAMI, Fla. – A career burglar was arrested Tuesday morning after he fled from an officer during a traffic stop in South Miami and then broke into a home, authorities said. According to a South Miami police Detective Fernando Bosch, the suspect was a passenger inside a car that was stopped by an officer in the area of Southwest 59th Place and 68th Street for running a stop sign. The detective said the driver and the passenger, who is wanted in connection with several burglaries, fled from the car and the passenger ran into a nearby home. No one was inside the home at the time, Bosch confirmed. A K-9 unit was called to the scene and the suspect, identified as Damian Kelly, was taken into custody.

SOUTH MIAMI, Fla. – A garbage truck collided with an SUV and then slammed into a recording studio owned by Gloria Estefan early Monday in South Miami, authorities said. The impact of the initial collision sent the SUV into a third vehicle, Camacho said. Paramedics transported two people who were riding in the garbage truck to Kendall Regional Medical Center. Camacho said the passenger of the truck jumped from vehicle before it hit the building, possibly saving that person's life. It serves as a recording studio for Estefan and her family.

SOUTH MIAMI, Fla. – One person was killed and four others were injured Wednesday in a crash at the intersection of Sunset Drive and U.S. 1 in South Miami, authorities said. One here, one there, one stuck in the car and they wanted to pull him out," business owner B. Amini said. The accident led South Miami police to close U.S. 1 in both directions from Sunset Place, south to the hospital. A gray convertible involved in the crash ended up in the southbound lanes and the other car jumped the curb near a grassy median. Authorities have not released the names of the person who died or the people who were injured.

SOUTH MIAMI, Fla. – When it comes to saving energy, South Miami Mayor Philip Stoddard isn’t leaving a penny. His home runs completely on solar panels that even charge his electric car. The ordinance in South Miami requires that for every 1,000 square feet of roof area there be 175 square feet of solar panels. At first, the solar panels will have a cost even for homeowners who will be working on renovations that involved more than 75 percent of the home's total square footage. "I didn’t oppose solar, absolutely for solar but I’m for freedom of choice," Liebman said.

SOUTH MIAMI, Fla. – An off-duty South Miami police captain spotted a group of men trying to break into vehicles early Wednesday morning across the street from his home. The captain said he was sitting on his patio when he saw four men pull up to an apartment building near Southwest 58th Avenue and Southwest 74th Terrace. He said the group walked through the parking lot and checked for unlocked cars to target, a crime that investigators called "car hopping." The captain called to report the crime. Police found three of the men and took them into custody.

SOUTH MIAMI, Fla. – Two pedestrians were injured in a crash Friday near Sunset Place. "I stepped out of the car and there were two (men) on the ground there," George Uche, who was driving the BMW, told Local 10 News. The drivers weren't injured, but they gave conflicting accounts of what happened. A man who was driving the SUV said his tire blew out and he lost control. I hope they don't check his phone and see something that he shouldn't have been doing."
