CBS isn't the only network that has modified its Super Bowl week plans. ESPN and NFL Network usually begin coverage from where the big game is held the Sunday before and when the teams usually arrive.

The positive reviews for Nickelodeon's kids-focused broadcast of last Sunday's NFL playoff game showed the potential of alternate broadcasts of sporting events. The Nickelodeon presentation not only provided a template on doing alternate broadcasts. CBS and Nickelodeon weren't the only ones to use multiple networks during Sunday's playoff games. What also made the Nickelodeon broadcast successful is that appealed to parents and kids. Some alternate broadcasts have fallen short because the on-field action was often ignored.

FORT WORTH, Texas FORT WORTH, TexasJim Nantz will be alone in the broadcast booth when the PGA Tour resumes its schedule Thursday. In announcing the broadcast and productions plans for the return to golf, CBS Sports Chairman Sean McManus said the network would have what Nantz dubbed a confession cam." McManus also said the network has been working more aggressively to have players wear microphones, and that CBS already has received commitments from some players. If you had a chance to hear from 30 players in the field, you can't imagine what a difference that could make to our broadcast. And he'll be calling action at an event with no spectators, a policy of the PGA Tour for five straight tournaments until the Memorial on July 16-19.

Jack Whitaker, the iconic sports broadcaster, died Sunday morning at his home in Devon, Pennsylvania, of natural causes at age 95. Whitaker's career spanned nearly four decades after starting at CBS Sports in the late 1950s, the network reported Sunday. "There will never be another Jack Whitaker in sports broadcasting," CBS Sports Chairman Sean McManus said in a statement. CBS News reported that Whitaker is survived by his wife, Patricia; daughters Marybeth Helgevold and Ann Hanan; and sons Gerry, Whitaker, Jack Whitaker III and Kevin Whitaker, as well as 11 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. CBS reported that funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date.
