So far, the state says students will need to take the tests. “It’s just not clear to parents what the options are,” said concerned parent Amanda Prieto. “It really doesn’t seem fair,” said Miami-Dade school board member Luisa Santos. State Rep. Robin Bartleman, a former Broward County school board member, is pushing a bill in Tallahassee that calls for test results not to be used to punish school districts across the state.

Patricia Good, the school board member that represents District 2, told Runcie that he needs to deal with external pressures to reopen. A total of five people are running for the Broward County School Board's at-large seat in District 9. Debbie Hixon, Jeff Holness, Joyce Bryan, Narnike Grant and Jimmy Witherspoon appear on the Broward County ballot. Hixon has over three decades of experience teaching in Broward County. Bryan, a former mayor of the City of Margate, has worked as a substitute teacher in Broward since 2007. Witherspoon has spent nearly two decades with Broward County Public Schools, currently at Dillard High working as a counsellor.

Debbie Hixon is seeking to fill the seat being vacated by Robin Bartleman, who is running for state Senate. Her husband, Chris Hixon, was athletic director at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School when he and 16 others were killed in the Feb. 14, 2018, mass shooting. Debbie Hixon said the timing feels right to "lift teachers up." School safety is also among the priorities she hopes to bring to the school board.
