After two fatal shootings on Ocean Drive last week Miami Beach city leaders held what has become a familiar debate about what to do.

Miami Beach commissioners planned to meet on Monday to discuss preventive measures in the wake of two fatal shootings over the weekend on South Beach.

The new year started in Miami Beach with a ban on cigarette smoking on the beach and at public parks after most city commissioners voted in support of it during a public meeting in September.

Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber is in favor of ending alcohol sales after 2:00 a.m. and described today as a moment of reconciliation for the city commission.

Miami Beach residents voted in favor of a measure back in November, asking city commissioners to pass an ordinance banning alcohol sales after 2 a.m. to help curb violence on the streets.

Now, Miami Beach Commissioner Ricky Arriola's own political party is calling him out. The commissioner that Miami Beach residents voted for in November seems very different from the one that were seeing now, said Dan Royles, past president of the Miami Beach Democratic Club. MIAMI BEACH, Fla. Miami Beachs sun, surf and sand brand has changed. Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber said that over the last few decades, Ocean Drive has grown to resemble a beachfront Bourbon Street. Gelber and some of the commissioners want to transform the entertainment district into a cultural district. They are considering enforcing the change with a zoning overhaul, a midnight last-call for alcohol, and an oversight committee. And not just do what we have been doing, which are a lot of one-off things that dont address the issue, said Ricky Arriola, a Miami Beach commissioner.
