DNA tech advances helped detectives to identify an infamous serial rapist who was sentenced on Thursday in Miami-Dade County court — but not for rape.

A jury found a man guilty Wednesday of a 1983 rape in Miami-Dade County after DNA tech advances helped detectives to find new evidence.

The defense team for accused serial rapist Robert Koehler, known as the “Pillowcase Rapist,” is expected to call on its final two witnesses Tuesday.

Prosecutors said detectives found trinkets from his victims and a metal nail file similar to the weapon his victims’ had described. The charges included a felony, so his DNA was included in an FBI database that included DNA from a 1983 rape kit in Miami-Dade County. Koehler, 29, is facing charges of domestic violence assault, attempted burglary and criminal mischief in Brevard County.

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Robert Eugene Koehler, who some believe is the man known as the “Pillowcase Rapist,” arrived Wednesday at the jail in west Miami-Dade, facing charges of sexual battery with a deadly weapon for a rape case that dates back to December 1983. Hi arrest warrant alleges that Koehler broke into a woman’s home one night armed with what may have been an ice pick. Authorities said the “Pillowcase Rapist” attacked more than 40 women from South Miami to Deerfield Beach in the 1980s, but he disappeared and was never arrested. Now Koehler’s arrest may change everything. Detectives said they will now get a swab of Koehler’s DNA directly from him and check that against the DNA they have on record.

An arrest warrant later showed detectives believe he was the man who earned the moniker for using a pillowcase to cover the faces of dozens of his victims in South Florida. An FBI database helped detectives to catch their suspect. According to the arrest warrant, the rape kit of a 25-year-old woman who officers believe was his victim in 1983 was included in the FBI’s Combined DNA Index System. The first sample was from Koehler’s son Jan. 13, and detectives collected the second sample after following Koehler to a public area Jan. 16. Detectives sent the evidence to the Miami-Dade Police Department’s crime laboratory, where there was confirmation Jan. 17.
