The incident happened Monday morning on Amaryllis Avenue in Pahokee. According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, Antonio Milian was backing out of the driveway of his home when he "felt a bump and heard yelling." He got out of the 2005 Lexus and found Tremain Milian trapped under the passenger side of the car. The 1-year-old boy was taken to St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach, where he was pronounced dead.

DeSantis sent a letter Tuesday to FDLE Commissioner Rick Swearingen requesting "a preliminary inquiry into misconduct and allegations that go beyond the reported concerns with Jeffrey Epstein's work release." DeSantis also issued an executive order reassigning the investigation from Palm Beach County State Attorney Dave Aronberg to the 19th Judicial Circuit of Florida. "Floridians expect and deserve a full and fair investigation," DeSantis said. The governor's actions come after Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw sent him a letter formally requesting that the FDLE "assume the existing criminal investigation."

Lauren Book, D-Plantation, said in a letter Tuesday that the Republican governor should authorize a Florida Department of Law Enforcement probe into the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office. Epstein was allowed out on work release 12 hours a day, six days a week, while completing a 13-month sentence on prostitution-related charges involving underage girls. If Epstein was able to abuse young girls while under supervised work release, we need to understand very clearly when and how these egregious lapses and abuses occurred so they cannot be repeated."
