Nordstrom's 1Q sales fell 40% as pandemic shuttered stores
NEW YORK – Upscale department store retailer Nordstrom reported Thursday that its sales plunged nearly 40% in its fiscal first quarter when the pandemic forced a temporary shutdown of its stores. Nordstrom announced earlier this month that it was closing 16 of its 116 full-scale department stores. Before the pandemic, many department stores were weakened because of a consumer shift to spending online. The department store operator posted revenue of $2.03 billion in the period, also missing Street forecasts. During the year-ago period, Nordstrom had sales of $3.35 billion.

Macy’s to furlough majority of its 130,000 workers
Macy's stores nationwide are closed due to the coronavirus. Macy's said the majority of its 125,000 employees will be furloughed this week and that it is transitioning to an "absolute minimum workforce" needed to maintain basic operations. Macy's said it has lost the bulk of its sales due to the temporarily closing of more than 600 stores starting March 18. The furlough of workers will have negative consequences for an economy in which the retail industry supports one out of four workers. According to a recent report by Cowen & Co, department stores have enough cash to make it to about five to eight months with their stores temporarily closed.

Walmart and Nordstrom are building stores that don't sell anything
So Walmart and Nordstrom are building physical stores that don't actually sell anything. Earlier this month, Walmart opened Walmart Pickup Point, a 40,000 square-foot prototype store outside of Chicago in Lincolnwood, Illinois, to cater to customers' online pickups and deliveries. The new Walmart locations share similarities with Nordstrom Local, a concept Nordstrom first introduced in Los Angeles in 2017. Buy online, pickup in store growsRetailers have been successfully expanding online pickup options in their stores in recent years. For Nordstrom, customers who visit Local stores spend two and a half times more on average than regular customers, according to the company.

Retailers among 2019's worst stocks
Spencer Platt/Getty Images(CNN) - Looking for more proof of just how hard it is for traditional retailers to compete in a world that's increasingly dominated by Amazon? Nordstrom and Gap are the worst-performing stocks in the S&P 500 so far this year. Several other big brick-and-mortar retailers are among the market's biggest losers of the first half of 2019. All of those companies have recorded sluggish sales and profits as consumers increasingly shop online. And Home Depot, which faces less competition from Amazon and online shopping in general, is up more than 20%.
