Authorities confirmed Wednesday that the boy is in good condition. According to Monroe County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Adam Linhardt, the boy was diving in 20 feet of water with his family and a dive master with a commercial dive boat out of Captain Hook’s Marina and Dive Center. Linhardt said the group was in the water for about 35 minutes before everyone surfaced shortly after 10:45 a.m. The boy is now stable at the hospital and is expected to recover.

Before pediatricians identified the pattern, some children were initially misdiagnosed as Kawasaki disease cases. “The gastrointestinal symptoms are more than in Kawasaki, they get significant abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea -- which usually is not as prominent in Kawasaki," Laufer said.

In a statement, Rodriguez added the 289-bed hospital is following the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommendations. The hospital is taking preventive measures. Local officials are asking anyone who suspects they were exposed to COVID-19 in Miami-Dade County to call 305-324-2400.
