According to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue spokeswoman Erika Benitez, firefighters arrived at the scene to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the unit. Sky 10 was above the scene shortly after 10 a.m. as the fire appeared to have been extinguished. A window was blown out and the exterior wall around the window was blackened by the smoke and flames. According to Benitez, the apartment building was evacuated and the Red Cross has been requested to provide temporary assistance to the affected families.

Officers set up a perimeter in the area around Dr. William A. Chapman Elementary School, at 27190 SW 140 Ave., and Miami Douglas Macarthur South Senior High School, at 13990 SW 264 St., near Naranja Park.
