The governor has been silent on any new guidance on COVID-19 since pushing the state into Phase 3 in late September. “You have an option; wear a mask or have shut downs, those are the two options in front of us,” said Broward County Mayor Steve Geller. “Our contact tracing needs to be better, our quarantine needs to be better, mask wearing needs to be better,” said Broward County Teachers Union President Anna Fusco.

The first two days of online learning for the new school year at Miami-Dade schools were interrupted when no one could access the K-12 platform. While Superintendent of Schools Alberto Carvalho said Oliveros was responsible for at least eight of the attacks, authorities believe he was not acting alone. Web expert Craig Agranoff says executing that type of attack may not be as complicated as youd imagine. A simple Google search of how to do one of these will reveal how to do them, Agranoff said. It was an IP address that led police to South Miami High School junior David Oliveros, who was arrested Thursday. Broward Public Schools Superintendent Robert W. Runcie and Miami-Dade Public Schools Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho disagreed on after-school activities. Carvalho and Runcie said there are no COVID-19 cases linked to either of the school districts. “Speak with your children about what this virus is; what it isn’t,” Carvalho said, adding “some degree of social isolation” is important. The Florida Department of Education is working with the Florida Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to monitor public schools.
