CRIMINAL LAW: PROTESTA Florida legislative proposal would make it easier to criminalize protesters and prevent civil litigation if a protester is a victim of police brutality. Florida Senate Bill 48 creates publicly funded educational savings accounts to help families pay for tuition at private schools. Florida Senate Bill 84 voids the stateās pension plan for a privatized 401(k) retirement plan. Florida Senate Bill 90 limits vote-by-mail applications to one election cycle and eliminates drop-off boxes.

Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle is facing off against opponent Melba Pearson Tuesday as she seeks an eighth term in office. Fernandez Rundle has been Miami-Dades state attorney since 1993 and has come under criticism for never charging an on-duty police officer with murder in her 27 years in office. Significant races and likely also some concern over personal interaction during a pandemic have led to larger than expected participation in early voting and vote-by-mail in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. I think well have in excess of 25% turnout, which will be the highest for any August primary, Broward Supervisor of Elections Pete Antonacci said. In Broward, a bitter tone in attacks has sparked the Democratic primary for sheriff, the de facto hole race in this overwhelmingly democratic county. If you have a mail-in ballot you can still drop it off at specified Miami-Dade and Broward locations from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday.
